How it was done:
When the heating bill comes due at Whittier Place, management’s decision to replace the complex’s 21 year-old natural gas burners will translate into huge savings. Whittier Place is a residential complex of 463 condominiums, with central heating and cooling, located in the West End of Boston.
In just one year, the new equipment has saved Whittier $13,304 in energy costs – nearly twice the original projected energy savings of $6,800.
Geoffrey Wilkinson, president of George T. Wilkinson Inc., devised a plan which not only saved energy, but also allowed Keyspan to help pay for the installation.
Wilkinson installed three natural gas burners with AutoFlame® Mark VI evolution PID combustion controls with outdoor reset. Autoflame® ensures the boiler will fire up fast, with dependability and reliability. Wilkinson is the exclusive Autoflame® dealer in Southern New England.
“Payback will be in less than two years,” said Wilkinson.
With help from the energy rebate offered by Keyspan, Whittier Place also saved money on the installation. Keyspan paid $25,000 as an energy rebate on the $75,000 installation.
“The money was put right into the customer’s account,” said Wilkinson.
Wilkinson is an expert in energy saving installations and helping customers receive the maximum in available rebates to help pay for the work.

For Whittier Place, Wilkinson prepared an energy analysis and presented it under the demand side management program.
Peter Tulis, superintendent of Whittier Place, was very pleased with both the energy savings and the installation by the Wilkinson crew.
The original burners were installed 20 years ago when the complex was first converted from apartments to condominiums.
“Wilkinson installed three new burners with Autoflame®. They installed the burners at the end of the spring last year,” said Tulis. There was never an interruption in service to any of the residential units.
“One of the challenges of this job was recognizing there was still life left in the existing boilers,” said Geoff Wilkinson.
Installing the new burners with an Autoflame® controller made a huge difference in energy savings.
The relationship between Wilkinson and Whittier is a long one. Wilkinson’s staff also replaced all the water shut off valves in the entire complex, which now makes it much easier for residents who need to have repairs made on their units.
“This makes it much easier to control shut offs to different areas of the building,” said Tulis.
