NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

Northeastern University:
New power plant delivers more steam; wins accolades for emissions.

Problem:

Northeastern University needed a new boiler to meet the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) emission standards.

Solution:

A one-of-kind, state-of-the-art Wilkinson Centurian™ boiler with an Autoflame® Mark VI combustion control system.

Results:

A system that controls pollution output, fuel consumption savings of 10 percent conservatively in energy costs and substantial unknown savings in maintenance costs/wear and tear costs.

How it was done:

Northeastern University needed to add more power to its heating system. State regulations required the university put in the Best Available Control Technology to expand.

The University wanted a company that could deliver a product that met current strict emission standards. The job also had to be done without disrupting the lives of the more than 23,000 people who live, work, and go to school on campus.

George T. Wilkinson Inc. was able to get the job done. As an added bonus, the 1,000 BHP ultra-low emissions, steam boiler it added to the existing system was lauded by the State Department of Environmental Protection as the cleanest emission boiler seen to date.

Northeastern’s new power plant is one of the largest, cleanest low pressure power plants in the country.

Wilkinson simplified the entire system by installing Autoflame®. This new boiler stands out because it reliably burns ultra low sulfur diesel and natural gas with the utmost combustion efficiencies. In addition, this unit meets all necessary emissions requirements.

Regulations required special attention to emissions in the new system. Northeastern’s old system was a 4,200 BHP steam power plant. An extra challenge — the University needed to be able to fire up light oil as a backup during winter months when gas use was curtailed.

Wilkinson technicians and engineers teamed up with several partners to determine the right equipment and design. A 1,000 horsepower three-pass, wet-back, scotch marine boiler was selected and combined with a gas-oil fired boiler.

The final touch was to incorporate Autoflame®, a microprocessor PID combustion control system. The Autoflame Combustion Management System™ ensures this unit will operate dependably while enabling the entire system to operate in compliance with the necessary and specific emissions standards. Wilkinson is the exclusive Autoflame® dealer for southern New England.

Northeastern was already enjoying the benefits of Autoflame® with its existing five large boilers. Because of the Autoflame® Mark VI combustion control the college achieved 10 percent conservatively in energy savings and additionally experienced substantial unknown savings in maintenance costs/wear and tear costs.

As a result of installing the Autoflame Combustion Management System™, Northeastern University was able to control pollution output and achieve a savings of 10 percent conservatively in energy costs.
